The Society has sponsored the preschool teacher and one maid on the Sri Lanka Open University one -year (weekend) certificate course in Preschool Education. Project proposal costing (approx. U$ 50/month/maid) is available on request. EMMEUS Bilthovan Netherlands has sent Euro 1000 towards this. Using these funds weekly sessions in Kitchen craft and nutrition is conducted for the maids by a retired instructress from the Department of Agriculture.

REFUSE-COMPOSTING PROJECT:A large cement bin with two compartments with an aluminium lids was constructed for composting the kitchen refuse. A cement path from the kitchen allows easy access. This needs regular maintenance with layering of dry leaves and regularly turn-overs for efficinet decay. Financial assistance is sought for 4 labour days /month at Rs.500/day and Rs.2000 once in 6 months to empty the bin (U$ 60/year) |
COMPUTER UNIT:This was initiated in a cubicle constructed in the Library with funds donated by well wishers in the USA. Current needs:Maintenance of hardware and accessories (U$ 500). |
GARDEN CULTIVATION PROJECT:The home premises which is around 2 acres has been cultivated with banana and leafy vegetables on an agricultural project initiated under expert advise. At present although generating income by sale and with home consumption, it needs daily maintenance to make it profitable. The strategic road-side location is also still underutilized in marketing the produce. A protective fence and improved marketing management needs Rs.250,000 (U$2,500).

NEW PROJECTS |
DAYCARE CENTRE:
COST OF PROJECT: Rs. 482,340.00 + (10% contingencies; 12% VAT) (approx.U$5000).
The Preschool was extended last year for intake of outside kids at a very nominal fee of U$3/month. We decided to combine the preschool with a Daycare centre, on a nominal charge (U$5), to help the working parents in the area. We are of the view that such an activity would be highly beneficial to the low-income families in the locality.
To establish a Daycare Centre a small building in our premises, which was originally built as a Matrons quarters was upgraded. However, the building premises need to be improved initially with a retaining wall and a wire fence with drainage of storm water to stabilize the building and to prevent soil erosion. Since we were unable to raise the entire funds required to implement the engineering plans, initially the indoor renovations which includes two rooms, pantry and toilet were upgraded with available funds and Daycare services commenced in January this year.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Project Description PDF format Can Be Downloaded
Objective of the proposed activity- Construction of a retaining wall with wire fencing to stabilize the building as a Dining-Resting area for the Daycare Centre.
- Construction of storm water drains to prevent soil erosion.
The site inspection and engineering estimate for this, inclusive of the drawings, which have been carried out by U&D Engineering Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. Kandy, on an honorary basis, are available.
Benefit to the Children Upgrading this building would serve a dual purpose. The ground floor can be used for Daycare facilities and the upper floor as a common indoor play and utility area for all children. Stabilizing this building with a retaining wall and storm water drains would ensure safety and protection for the entire premises of the children´s home. This would have an overall beneficial effect on the childrens health and well being.
The establishment of a Daycare Centre with services offered would help both the Home and the local working parents. The home children could interact with kids from the community at an early age. This would help these institutionalized children to adapt themselves in the society in the future. |
NEW PROJECT PROPOSAL: |
TITLE: PLAYGROUND- FENCE & RETAINING WALL COST OF PROJECT: STAGE 01- Funds (U$ 5000)collected and work commenced in September STAGE 02- Rs.545,231.00 +10% contingencies = Approx.LRs 600,000.00 (U$ 6000)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Background and Current Facilities Within the last five years we have upgraded the outdoor play area for the preschoolers, which serves as the playground for the other children as well. However, this playground is on an elevation with one boundary (over 100 ft in length) along a steep embankment. At present we have barbed wired and planted a live fence for the children’s safety. But this is inadequate as the small children tend to creep under this fence while the older mischievous boys slide down the embankment! The high cost involved has delayed the construction of a proper fence. We have now prepared the budget in two stages in order to make this urgent need a reality.
Objective of the proposed activity- Construction of a concrete /masonry retaining wall to strengthen the embankment.
- Erecting a wire-linked fence lengthwise on this wall length approx. 116 ft.
The site inspection and engineering estimate for this, inclusive of the drawings, which have been carried out by "Vasthu Sankalpe" Arcitectural design consultants, on a voluntary basis, can be downloaded.
Brief Description of the proposed activity Uprooting vegetation, clearing site, excavation and earth filling. Construction of reinforced concrete retaining wall alongside the embankment abutting the lower level of the garden and paddy field, Erection of a 5´ high wire-linked fence on the concrete wall.
Benefit to the Children A well constructed fence would make it safe for the children to use this playground and also extend the playarea. Retaining the embankment would prevent soil erosion and better utilization of the garden below for crop cultivation and the paddy. This would have an overall beneficial effect on the children’s well being.
